Interaction of laser radiation with matter, pumping processes, and the theory of passive optical resonators are discussed. The text then develops theory for CW and transient laser action, using the rate equations in the lowest-order approximation. Characteristic properties of types of lasers (solid state lasers, gas lasers, chemical dye lasers, and other chemical lasers, semiconductor lasers) and properties of laser beams (monochromaticity, coherence, brightness, directionality) are covered.
